JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa is a proud participant of various Green Initiatives.
As you explore our website look for the 'Green Scene' Peaks, viewed above, that describe the various Green Initiatives the property participates in.
Land Preservation: Resort opened in 2005 donating 150 acres of pristine Sonoran desert to the Tucson Mountain Park and by 2008 resort has now increased that amount to 330 acres to be forever preserved.
Environmental Enhancement Fund: Starr Pass' environmental commitment is evident in an important agreement known as EEF. Allocating a percentage of sales, these funds will contribute $17m in 20 years used to conduct research on mountain lion populations, trailheads and signage in Tucson Mountain Park and controlling of buffelgrass; a non-native species of plant that increases the threat of fire to our Sonoran Desert.
Recycled Fill: No foreign soil was every brought into the resort in the building of the property. All rocks were ground down to different sizes as fill dirt to build the resort.
Wash Preservation: All washes were preserved and kept in tact to allow free flow of water sources from the upper desert to lower desert thus fulfilling our commitment to allow aquifer to be replenished and to preserve the natural highways for desert animals.
Winter Water Plan: Starr Pass Golf Club only over seeds fairways and tees during the winter months. By allowing the roughs to go dormant we save millions of gallons of water each year. .
Reclaimed Water: All golf course irrigation is reclaimed water. No ground water is used when watering the golf course.
Events: The Banquet Department and most food outlets have made a commitment to first purchase organic food when it is available before in-organic as of November 2007.
Meat Product: Resort has committed to purchasing humanely treated animals free of any additional hormones or antibiotics as it is available.
Sustainable Produce:The resort works closely with the Agua Linda CSA; an organic grower who practices sustainable agriculture free of any GMO or use of engineered seed crops.
Xeriscape: 95% of property left in original state of the sonoran desert with all plant material. Property participates in Xeriscaping (low water landscaping) to save this valuable desert resource.
Line Caught Fish: When purchasing seafood we always refer to the Monterey Bay Aquarium's West Coast seafood guide to ensure we are supporting well managed fisheries which contribute to healthy ocean wildlife.
On-site Garden: Resort maintains an organic garden outside of Primo Restaurant that is cultivated and items are used in the restaurant for meal functions.
Linen Program: Resort is implementing a linen re-use program within housekeeping. Bed linens are changed (washed) every 3 days unless otherwise requested by our guests thus reducing water use.
Recycle Newspaper: The Housekeeping Department recycles all newspapers from guestrooms.
Recycle Paper: In convention space, recycle bins are now placed in strategic locations to allow guests to recycle newspapers and fine paper used during meetings. Every department (back of house) participates in paper recycling program.
Corn Cups: Plastic cups in lobby have been replaced with "corn cups" which consist almost entirely of corn and break down in composting within 45 days!
GREEN GOLF CLUB
Starr Pass Golf Course is proud to announce that as of February 2008 we have become an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program member, and are currently finishing the requirements to become a certified member of the Audubon Sanctuary Program.
What is the Audubon? The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses helps golf courses to enhance wildlife habitats and protect natural resources for the benefit of people, wildlife, and the game of golf. The program is designed to give golf course managers the information and guidance they need to implement stewardship projects and receive recognition for their efforts.
The Golf Program is part of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System, a nationwide network of conservation partnerships that includes backyards, schools, corporate and business properties, and golf courses. It is administered by Audubon International, a non-profit environmental organization that spearheads education and conservation assistance programs that promote environmental stewardship and sustainability.
